Mangosteen extract

The team of Tan et al. recently published an article in Cosmetics exploring the potential of mangosteen peel as a cosmetic ingredient, both for its skincare properties, upcycling potential, and impact on local economies.
Mangosteen is a sweet and juicy fruit mainly grown in Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia.Fruit is often processed into juices, concentrates, and dried fruit for consumption, leaving waste such as peels.
Tan et al. used mangosteen peel to create an upcycled standardized extract with potential anti-aging, antioxidant, anti-wrinkle and pigmentation control properties.
“Natural antioxidants derived from natural sources such as mangosteen peel are superior to synthetic antioxidants due to the adverse side effects of synthetic antioxidants,” Tan et al.”The aim of this study was therefore to formulate and evaluate a novel herbal cream containing standardized mangosteen peel extract.”
Antioxidants are often used to fight free radicals and mitigate their skin-aging effects.Tan et al. also suggest that botanical ingredients may be preferable to synthetic ingredients to avoid side effects such as dry skin and irritation.
The research team found that their mangosteen peel extract had enhanced antioxidant power compared to ascorbic acid, butylated hydroxytoluene, and Trolox.Tan et al. showed that mangosteen peel extract was relatively safe and effective, especially when compared with the possible skin irritation and lung toxicity of BHT.
According to the researchers, the antioxidant properties of mangosteen peel extract may be attributed to phenolic compounds such as alpha-mangosteen, flavonoids, epicatechin, and tannins.
“Standardization is needed to ensure the quality, safety, efficacy, and reproducibility of mangosteen peel extract,” said Tan et al.“Furthermore, sensory characteristics such as texture, greasiness and absorption are subjective and may vary from person to person.”
The extract was also able to inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in controlling melanin production.Tan et al found that one form of mangosteen peel extract reduced tyrosinase by over 60%, which means it may be an effective skin lightening ingredient.
Tan et al. added that source, growth conditions, maturity, harvesting, processing, and drying temperatures may contribute to changes in phenolic compounds. They also said that further research should be conducted to evaluate the effects of antioxidant, anti-aging and pigment control.
Tan et al. said that the use of mangosteen peels and other food waste to make cosmetic raw materials is in line with the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations to “reduce waste generation, promote the efficient use of natural resources and sustainable living”.
Like many upgraded ingredients, standardized mangosteen peel extract enables a circular economy, especially in regions where plant-based foods are produced.
Malaysia is one of the major producers of mangosteen, and the crop has been specifically mentioned as an important domestic and export product in the country’s 2006-2010 development plan.
“The development of a green cosmeceutical mangosteen herbal cream can help boost the local economy and increase opportunities for international cooperation,” said Tan et al.
