Medicinal black garlic extract for blood pressure control

MADRID, Feb. 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Aged Black Garlic (ABG+®), a pharmaceutical biotechnology product, SLU, has shown new beneficial potential for blood pressure balancing in a new clinical study in people with moderately elevated cholesterol levels. ABG+ is locally grown and cultivated, just two hours from a pharmaceutical facility, and carefully processed using environmentally friendly technologies. This process produces very little waste and greatly reduces the environmental impact.
This randomized, double-blind, continuous, cross-controlled intervention study was published in the scientific journal Nutrition on January 18, 2022 [1] and was conducted at the University Hospital of Sant Joan de Reus in Barcelona. The study, led by Dr. Rosa Walls, author of over 150 scientific papers and supervisor of dozens of doctoral theses, involved 67 adult volunteers with hypercholesterolemia and relatively high blood LDL levels. Each participant received 250 mg of ABG+ or placebo for six weeks, with a three-week washout period before switching. The subjects were also prescribed a diet excluding lipid-lowering and antihypertensive products.
The six-week results showed that the ABG+ extract significantly reduced diastolic blood pressure (DBP) by an average of 5.85 mmHg. compared to placebo. This favorable reaction was especially pronounced in men. Alberto Espinel, Head of Research and Development at Pharmaactive, explained: “Reducing diastolic blood pressure by only 5 mmHg. Art. can significantly reduce the risk of stroke and other vascular diseases.”
Hypertension affects nearly a third of adults worldwide and is a major preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. Among people aged 40 to 89 years, an increase in diastolic blood pressure for every 10 mm Hg. Art. doubled the risk associated with common cardiovascular disease and stroke.
This is the first clinical study conducted for ABG+, building on encouraging results from the company’s two previous animal studies. These trials demonstrated the ingredient’s cardioprotective effects as well as its ability to favorably balance blood lipids and improve blood vessel function.
“Aged black garlic has long been considered a delicacy and an integral part of the Asian diet, as well as a health booster,” Aspinell says. “Empirical evidence demonstrates the beneficial effects of black garlic on cardiovascular health. However, the magnitude of the impact depends on the amount and type of compounds accumulated during aging, as well as the ability to extract and retain these compounds during processing.
This delicious ingredient is traditionally made by storing whole bulbs of fresh Spanish garlic in high humidity and heat for several weeks. Garlic cloves darken and take on a soft, jelly-like texture, losing their characteristic spicy garlic flavor as they become sweeter. During this process, the aged bulb undergoes significant biochemical changes. The main organosulfur compounds, alliin and allicin, have been reduced in fresh garlic. However, the potent bioactive complex of soluble polyphenols (predominantly PAA, flavonoids and melanoids) was significantly elevated. The synergy of these antioxidants is considered the main source of ABG+’s cardioprotective properties.
Pharmaactive ABG+ extract is standardized to 1.25 mg S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC) polyphenols. It is manufactured using the company’s patented ABG Cool-Tech® aging technology. Its rich SAC concentration was confirmed by HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography).
“SAA is virtually absent in fresh garlic, but is synthesized and accumulated when ripe under certain environmental conditions,” Espinel explains. “The presence and concentration of active substances are highly dependent on the manufacturing process. Most commercial black garlic products on the market are only used for their culinary properties and contain little or no SAC. In other cases, SAC is obtained from garlic through a lengthy industrial process that involves soaking the bulbs in organic solvents, the result is simply labeled “old garlic”. This compromises bioactive content, and where existing studies on black garlic extracts have shown conflicting results and cause healthy function.”
“This is the first evidence of a blood pressure balancing effect of ABG+ extract as a natural alternative for populations whose intervention strategies are based on diet and healthy lifestyle maintenance,” Espinel continued. “Importantly, its positive effects are achieved by simply taking one tablet of ABG+ extract per day.”
“Future clinical research will focus on the blood pressure management capabilities of our ABG+ extract,” adds Julia Diaz, Head of Marketing, Pharmaactive. “Lifestyle choices, including dietary regimens such as DASH or the Mediterranean diet, are first-line treatments to slow and prevent high blood pressure. ABG+ is another effective and tasty nutritional tool to help control blood pressure, especially those with high blood pressure.” Among patients with arterial pressure. Those who have difficulty following dietary restrictions.”
All ABG+ ingredients are water soluble and can be used in a variety of applications including gums, capsules, soft gels, syrups and powders. Without the characteristic smell and taste of garlic, ABG+ ingredients are ideal for functional foods and even chewing gums.
