    Galantamine is used for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease and various other memory impairments, particularly those of vascular origin. It is an alkaloid that is obtained synthetically or from the bulbs and flowers of Galanthus Caucasicus (Caucasian snowdrop, Voronov’s snowdrop), Galanthus woronowii (Amaryllidaceae) and related genera like Narcissus (daffodil)), Leucojum(snowflake) and Lycoris including Lycoris radiata (Red Spider Lily).

    Galanthamine is natural extracted from lycoris radiate,is a tertiary alkaloid derived from snow drop and closely related species. It acts as a reversible competitive acetylcholinesterase (ACHE) inhibitor, while acts weaker on butyrylcholinesterse(BuChE).it is used in the treatment of disorders of the central nerbous system and may be used as an antidote to nonpolarizing muscle relaxants.Galanthamine hydrobromide is a white to almost white powder; sparingly soluble in water; insoluble chloroform, ether and alcohol .

     

    Galantamine hydrobromide is a benzazepine derived from the bulbs and flowers of narcissus, osmanthus, or canna. It is also an oral cholinesterase inhibitor. As a ligand for nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, it has been widely used to enhance neurocognitive function. Its function is to competitively and reversibly inhibit acetylcholinesterase, thereby increasing the concentration of acetylcholine. When absorbed into the bloodstream, galantamine hydrobromide is readily absorbed into various parts of the body, including the brain. It binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, causing conformational changes and increasing acetylcholine release. It also works by competing with and reversing the effects of cholinesterase inhibitors. By inhibiting cholinesterase, it prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine, thereby increasing the levels and duration of this powerful neurotransmitter. Galantamine may also improve learning and memory, prevent brain inflammation, and maintain high levels of neurotransmitters by maintaining the integrity of neurons and synapses
