    Olivetol is a naturally occurring organic compound. It is found in certain species of lichens and can be readily extracted.

    Olivetol is a natural polyphenolic compound found in lichens or produced by certain insects. is a naturally occurring compound originally developed by degrading lichenic acid (also known as D-cerosol acid and valeric acid) extracted from the lichen plant and used primarily in laboratory development and chemical production. Olive alcohol has a variety of biological activities and is effective against a variety

    of pathogenic fungi and bacteria. This organic compound belongs to the resorcinol family.

     

    Functions:

    It is believed that Olivetol acts as a competitive inhibitor of the receptors CB1 and CB2. Due to its smaller size and its lack of more functional groups, it is believed that Olivetol binds more tightly and/or more aggressively to the  receptors CB1 and/or CB2 and has a much lower dissociation constant, allowing it to stay in the active site of the CB receptors for a longer period of time while not activating the receptor, thereby not causing the change in GABA release that is believed to be the mechanism of THC’s psychotropic effects.

     

    Applications:

    Olivetol was used as a template molecule in the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymer, It was also used as an inhibitor of (S)-mephenytoin 4′-hydroxylase activity of recombinant CYP2C19.
